St Aldhelm's Reading Dog
We are really lucky at St Aldhelm's to have our own reading dog, Odie.
Odie visits us with his owner Ali, who is one of our school governors. They join us from the Pets as Therapy, Read 2 Dogs programme, who provide support to people in the community. Click below for more information:
Odie visits our school each week to help children develop their reading skills. Children enjoy reading to someone who doesn't make judgements and only provides a listening ear! It is wonderful to see how much children enjoy their 1:1 sessions and great to see how their reading skills progress. It may be that children are working on their decoding skills, fluency, speed of reading or understanding texts and stories. It may just be that they read for enjoyment and pleasure. Either way, they are a huge asset to the school.
As this provision is really important in helping individual children develop a core skill, we are continuing during this time of national lockdown. We will take extra precautions by sitting more distantly and/or Ali wearing a facemask.
Reading is such an important life skill - thank you Odie for helping us!
